Radiata pine is a very versatile species of timber and while it is characteristic to have knots, holes, blemishes , resin pockets , it is also possible to have totally or partially clear boards or boards with limited combinations of defects. There are a variety of grades available and usually these are targeted at specific applications.
The most readily available grades are as follows, not all are available in all sizes and this information should be checked for availability before specifying for a given project.
'Clears'
as the name suggests a very high quality timber, virtually no defects, can have slight resin pockets, may be straight grained but not always, readily available ex New Zealand, limited production in Australia. Used by anyone wanting long length clear pieces, such as architraves
No.2 Clears or CF2E
Number 2 clears are a product that is clear of one face and 2 edges, the back however can contain a multitude of defects, occasionally once dressed some defects may show on the face.
No.1 Cutts
A cutting grade is a grade where you are able to get clear pieces of timber by cutting out the defects, in number 1 cutts every stick must produce a clear piece 1000mm long and must yield a minimum of 70% clears 600mm or longer for the remainder of the piece. A grade used by furniture manufacturers wanting longer clear pieces
No.2 Cutts
As for number 1 cutts except it must yield a minimum of 70% clears 600mm and longer. A grade used by furniture manufacturers or finger jointers wanting short length clears.
Dressing Grade or Furniture Grade or Select Grade
Known by many names but as they imply for use in furniture, a high grade that requires little or no docking to achieve pieces suitable for the application, particularly suitable for shelving etc.
Standard Grade
As the name suggests the standard available grade for many versatile applications, can contain many defects or combinations of defects but generally not large. This grade is common for boards, lining, floorings.
Merch or Commons or Industrial
This is generally a falldown grade from producing higher grade products, it is commonly used in the packaging industry or in non structural applications, not limitations exist in the grade as long as the pieces hold together during normal handling.
