New Zealand Douglas Fir is a plantation tree that was originally native to North America, Douglas Fir or Oregon as it is commonly known has been used extensively in Australia for building construction in both interior and exterior structural applications. Where it is used in the exterior particular attention is required to correct detailing and coating and ongoing preventative maintenance is required to ensure satisfactory performance. In critical exterior applications we would recommend a high durability hardwood or a preservative treated product.
New Zealand Douglas fir is usually supplied green (unseasoned) as it has a relatively low shrinkage factor. But is now being Kiln Dried as also. It is also usually rougher headed or dressed four sides, for a consistent finished size. It is suitable for bearers, floor joists, rafters, under purlins, studs, plates and even exposed rafters. It is also used for concrete formwork and scaffold planks.
