Structural Softwood Plywood

Most structural plywood used in Australia is produced locally, New Zealand or Chile using softwood veneers such as Radiata Pine or Slash pine or similar. The veneers are bonded together using phenol formaldehyde resin which sets under controlled heat and pressure. It forms a permanent bond and it will not deteriorate under wet, hot or cold conditions.

Structural plywood is produced to the standard AS/NZS 2269 and can also be branded with the PAA (Plywood Association of Australia) Quality control program stamp for mills that comply. The structural plywood can also be treated to H3 for above ground conditions for added protection.

Structural plywood can be used for a variety of applications such as commercial or domestic flooring, house bracing, roofing, lining, cladding, packaging and many other applications where a high strength panel product is required. Radiata pine structural plywood is typically rated at F11 structural rating, higher ratings of F14 etc are possible with species of veneers.

Grading: Structural plywood is generally graded in four face grades, A, B, C, D each providing different appearance finishes for intended applications.

A Grade Selected for Clear wood grain and limited blemishes and defects, can have small knots(<4mm) and minor splits(<3mm). Suitable for linings and claddings or where a clear varnish or high gloss paint finish is required.
B Grade Also of high grade containing some clear wood and uniform grain, some larger holes(<25mm) and minor splits (<3mm). Lining, Cladding, appearance where a stain finish or semi gloss is required.
C Grade Highlights the true nature of the wood, sound natural features, defects including filled holes (<50mm), tight knots (<50mm) and filled splits (<12mm x 600mm long) For use in a variety of applications including flooring, can be stained, flat paints or even varnished where the natural characteristics can be highlighted.
D Grade This is not an appearance face and is intended to used in applications where it is not seen but high strength is still required, such as bracing or roofing. Allowable defects such as holes (<75mm), unlimited knots, open splits up to 25mm wide by 1/3 sheet length are all within the grade.
