Radiata Pine is a very versatile timber species and especially ex New Zealand has a large portion of Clearwood between the knots (branches). The knots have a negative impact on both structural strength and stability, so it is possible to add stability by finger jointing short pieces of Radiata pine together into longer more usable pieces.
Short pieces of clear Radiata Pine are finger jointed (glued) together in to desired lengths and for particularly large sizes or squares also laminated (edge to edge or face to face glued) together. They can then me moulded or profiled to desired profile LOSP Treated and can also be primed with a oil based primer. Once installed 2 finishing coats of acrylic topcoat are all that is required. This creates a very versatile, stable exterior timber product that can be used in a multitude of applications, such as fascia, barge boards, verandah posts, pergola and carport rafters, battens, exterior trim, handrails, staircase balausters etc.. It is not however recommended as floor joists or bearers under decking.
Note An even better more durable finish is possible if an additional oil based primer is applied before the final 2 topcoats.
